Terms of Trade
Since December 7th 2004 the BBC has changed its stance on contracting independent radio producers.
In place of the old 'all-rights' contracts, where the indie gave up all potential rights in their production and earning a mere pitance from any potential exploitation, the new Terms of Trade outline a much more fair and equitable sharing of rights. While in no way a perfect state of affairs, following 9 months of negotiating, RIG were able to bring the new radio Terms of Trade somewhat in line with the comparable TV Terms of Trade. However, as with everything to do with dealing with the BBC, the new Terms are still overly complicated, open to interpretation (usually on the part of the BBC) and not exactly easy to get your head around (plus there are no page numbers in the printed version - which just goes to show something, but we're not sure what!)
So RIG has produced a set of documents and guidelines to help steer you through the Terms of Trade. These documents will be updated as the Terms of Trade 'bed-in' and we learn more about the realities of working with this bulky set of rules.
The downloads available below include the full Terms of Trade, a RIG Simple Guide and a copy of the Terms of Trade presentation given by Mike Hally & Neil Gardner from RIG in October 2005. We have also included all of the BBC Worldwide seminar information from October 2005's Terms of Trade seminar. All of these documents are available to read online, download or to print off.
